My friend Sokies is a kindy teacher in a really small kampung far way in Sandakan. We were unimates, neighbors on campus and most importantly F1 buddies. My first ever Malaysian Grand Prix experience was with her nearly 10 years ago. I hardly missed the annual event since. I think I only missed it once when it was on the same day as the general election, hence I had to tunaikan kewajipan pada negara. Other than that, I couldn’t recall not being at the circuit on race day.
Sokies is not just any teacher. She has a business degree and used to work with an investment company in the heart of the Golden Triangle. But caring for children has always been a passion. Perhaps having seven siblings (I think, can’t remember the exact number) plays a big part in developing her maternal instincts.
Her journey as a teacher began with small steps but with big clients. She started as a helper at a posh kindy in Bangsar. Amongst her students were anak menteri, anak pelakon, anak penyanyi etc. Then she moved to another posh kindy in Shah Alam, before she got accepted into KPLI, passed the program and got posted to the most rural of all rural places that one could think of building a kindy. Bangsar vs. Sandakan, talk about worlds apart!
Last week she wrote about a day in her life as a kindy teacher. Here’s the story:

To Sokies, reading the story reaffirms to me what great teacher you are. And yes, those cute faces indeed teach us life!
